the bagel incident

Shouldn't all bagels come pre-sliced. Who eats a bagel without cutting it in half first. Either you toast it or make it into a sandwich? Either way, it has to be cut in half first. Our favorite bagels do not come pre-sliced. With the amount of bagels we eat in our house, I should have invested in a bagel slicer long ago. Last Thursday I was kicking myself that I hadn't already.

The kids were getting ready for school and I heard Hunter calling me the kitchen. His voice had a hint of panic in it and I instantly knew something was wrong. He was cutting his bagel in half with a serrated bread knife and had accidentally cut his hand. I'm sure it hurt, but he seemed more scared than in pain. His first question was, "Do I have to get stitches?" and his next was, "Will they have to give me a shot?"

I get light-headed and queasy quite easily at the sight of blood. Thankfully this wasn't too bloody but let me just say that when he would squeeze his hand it looked like the insides were coming out. I called Jared who had just left for the gym and asked him to come home. He was only a few minutes away and promised he'd be there soon. Hunter looked pale and I was feeling a little light headed my self so we both sat down. Hunter began complaining that he couldn't breathe and wanted me to open the window. Just then, Jared walked in and Hunter stood up to show dad his cut and fainted into his arms. He looked over at my pale face and probably wondered how we would ever survive a real emergency.

Once Jared helped to stabilize the situation... (pathetic I know), he headed off to work and Hunter and I went to the Urgent Care Clinic. After waiting 2 hours, the doctor checked out Hunter's wound and determined that he did need stitches. Hunter was quite nervous about the shot so the doctor offered to try a topical ointment that if left to sit for a good half hour, might numb his hand enough to not need the shot at all. Turns out he needed that shot anyway. I've never had to learn first hand, but I guess the medicine going in burns pretty bad. Hunter did okay but didn't really want to watch what was going on. He did peek once when they were cleaning his cut and I heard him say, "That's disgusting!"

Me, I didn't even peek. I feel queasy even talking about this kind of stuff. I stood off to the side and let the doctor and two nurses do their jobs. I held Hunter's hand and gave him encouragement. Then, I realized I was feeling pretty light-headed and I got that cold sweat. I knew I had to sit down. So embarrassing. It wasn't long before the doctor noticed that I had "the look". He told one of the nurses to get me a stool so I could elevate my feet and cautioned me not to get up. Poor Hunter!

Five stitches later, all was well.

By now it was lunch time. I offered to get Hunter a mini pizza and thought he might want to relax at home on the couch, but he just wanted to get back to school. He ate his pizza in the car, we ran by the house to pick up his backpack and he was off to school.

I promised him that I would buy a bagel slicer the next time I went shopping. His comment was, "Why didn't you get one sooner?"

Good question.

Valentine's Day

I sure love the holidays. Our Valentine's Day was pretty great. For days and days the kids have been making all sorts of Valentine's for Jared and I and each other. Lots and lots... We've gone through a whole bunch of construction paper, pipe cleaners, and stickers but it really has been fun. This valentine was one of my favorites.

If you can't read it it says, "A little bit of playdo for a huge loved girl.

For breakfast we had pink pancakes and strawberry milk. I packed Valentine lunches for my big kids (Jared and I had a lunch date with our tag along Austin) and then we had a yummy Valentine's dinner as a family! Jared made us these yummy crepes. They are the best!

We really didn't need dessert after such a sweet dinner, but we had it anyway.

Yum!
During dinner we went around the table and said things that we love about each other. Hunter said that he loves that I make him a lunch to take to school whenever he wants. So simple, but it made me feel good. Tomorrow he will get a special note in his lunch box.

Happy Valentine's Day!
